Discover the Loire Valley

Staying at Le Moulin you can enjoy the peace and quiet of a country retreat in your own private grounds or take a short drive to a plethora of exciting and wonderful attractions.

Saumur is a delightful town on the banks of the river Loire, a 20-minute drive from Le Moulin. The château sits majestically overlooking the river and there are plenty of boutique shops, markets and restaurants to explore. The area is dominated by vines on the rolling landscape and there are plenty of places to go for a tour of the vineyards and cellars or just a wine tasting. This is where much of the great quality Crémant de Loire (a delicious sparkling wine made just like champagne) is produced.

The area around Saumur is famous for its troglodyte caves and many are now tourist attractions, including the former cave community at Louresse Rochmenier (11 minutes). Even closer is the fabulous Bio Parc Zoo at Doué la Fontaine (9-minutes drive from the Moulin) where many of the animal enclosures have been cut into the tuffeau stone giving it a natural feel. The giraffe enclosure is fabulous. Saumur is also home to the Cadre Noir, France’s elite military riding school. Their musical spectaculars are…..well, spectacular displays of horsemanship! The School is open for a visit of the stables too.

The museum and cultural centre at the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, where Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart are buried, is a must-see (36 minutes). The gorgeous medieval town of Montreuil-Bellay has a beautiful château and a maze of picture postcard streets to wander around.
